What are Scleral Lenses?

ScleralLens Diagram dark.jpg

Scleral lenses are large-diameter, rigid gas-permeable (RGP) lenses that rest on the white part of your eye (the sclera) instead of sitting directly on the cornea. This design creates a fluid-filled space between the lens and the surface of your eye, helping correct vision and keeping the eyes hydrated.

These lenses are often recommended when other types of contact lenses don’t work well. They are particularly useful for managing eye conditions such as:

  • Keratoconus
  • Irregular astigmatism
  • Moderate to severe dry eye
  • Giant papillary conjunctivitis (GPC)
  • Post-surgical corneal irregularity (including LASIK or PRK)
  • Presbyopia requiring multifocal vision correction

Dr. Arkady Selenow will evaluate your vision and eye health to determine whether scleral lenses are right for you.

4 Common Benefits of Scleral Lenses

Scleral lenses offer several advantages, particularly for individuals who haven’t had success with traditional contact lenses. The benefits of wearing scleral lenses include:

1. Stable, Reliable Vision 1. Stable, Reliable Vision

Because of their large size, scleral lenses remain centered and don’t shift during the day. This helps maintain sharp vision even if your cornea has an unusual shape.

2. Long-Lasting Materials

Scleral lenses are made from strong materials that let oxygen pass through. This helps keep your eyes healthy over time.

3. Protection from Irritants

The lenses cover a larger portion of your eye’s surface, acting as a barrier against wind, dust, allergens, and debris.

4. All-Day Comfort

Before inserting scleral lenses, they're filled with a sterile saline solution that keeps the eye moist throughout the day. This is especially helpful for those with dry eye syndrome.

Scleral Lenses for Keratoconus Treatment in Manhattan

Keratoconus affects the shape of your cornea, causing it to thin and bulge outward. This irregular shape distorts light as it enters your eye, leading to symptoms such as:

  • Blurred or distorted vision
  • Sudden worsening vision
  • Clouding of vision
  • Increased light sensitivity

Scleral lenses provide a smooth, dome-like surface over the irregular cornea. This helps focus light properly, reducing distortion and improving clarity for patients with keratoconus.
